Maintenance checklist for Sportster, Dyna, Softail and Touring models

Regular lubrication and maintenance will help keep your Harley-Davidson® motorcycle operating at peak performance. Harley-Davidson® factory-trained technicians utilize the latest diagnostic tools to service your motorcycle with Harley-Davidson® Genuine Motor Parts and use factory-approved methods, assuring you of thorough and competent workmanship. NOTE: Check your owners manual for the maintenance schedule of your bike. It may differ from what is listed below.

  1. Change engine oil and filter. Clean magnetic drain plug and install new O-ring. 20W50 ______ SYN-blend ______ SYN3® oil ______

  2. Inspect oil lines and brake system for leaks, contact or abrasion. 1,3

  3. Inspect exhaust system for leaks, cracks, and loose or missing fastners or heat shields. 3

  4. Inspect tires, tread depth and adjust pressure. Front: ______ Rear: ______ (tread depth) Front: ______ Rear: ______ (pressure)

  5. Check torque on wheel spokes, if equipped (Dyna® and Softail® models). 1,5

  6. Change primary chaincase lubricant. Clean magnetic drain plug and replace O-ring.

  7. Change transmission lubricant. Clean magnetic drain plug and replace O-ring.

  8. Check Clutch adjustment (Dyna® and Softail® models). 1

  9. Check level and condition of clutch fluid (CVO™ model). 1,4

  10. Inspect drive belt and sprockets; adjust belt. 1

  11. Check throttle, brake and clutch controls; adjust and lubricate (Dyna® and Softail® models). 1

  12. Check and lubricate brake and clutch controls; adjust as needed (CVO™ model). 1

  13. Inspect and lubricate jiffy stand. 1

  14. Inspect fuel lines and fittings for leaks, contact or abrasion.1,3

  15. Inspect break fluid sight glass. 4

  16. Inspect break pads abd discs for wear.

  17. Check operation of electrical equipment and switches.

  18. Adjust steering head bearings (Dyna®1,2, Softail®1, Springer®1 and CVO™1 models).

  19. Adjust rocker bearings (Springer® models1,6).

  20. Check torque on critical fasteners (Dyna®1, Softail®1,3 and CVO™1 models).

  21. Inspect, clean and tighten battery connections annually.3

  22. Check baterry voltage. ______

  23. Road test to verify component and system functions. ______ miles

Reminder: Lubricate steering head bearings every 2,500 miles (4,000 km) (Springer® models).1,7

  1. Should be performed by an authorized Harley-Davidson® dealer, unless you have the proper tools, service data and are mechanically qualified.

  2. Disassemble, lubricate and inspect every 30,000 miles (48,000 km).

  3. Perform annually or at specified intervals [30,000 miles (48,000 km) for CVO™ FLSTSE2] whichever comes first.

  4. Replace DOT 4 hydrualic brake/clutch fluid and flush system every two (2) years.

  5. Perform spoke tension check at the 1,000, 5,000, 20,000 mile services (1,600 km, 8,000 km, 32,000 km) and every 15,000 mile (24,000 km) interval thereafter. Not all vehicles are equipped with spoke wheels. Consult appropriate topic in service manual.

  6. Adjust at 500 miles (800 km).

  7. Disassemble, lubricate and inspect every 20,000 miles (32,000 km).
